T-32 & T-42 Training Grants

These are sources of support (stipend, some fee & tuition coverage, modest research allowance) for incoming doctoral students whose academic program goals match the aims of already existing training grants that School of Nursing faculty have been awarded.

The School of Nursing has for a number of years been awarded T-32 grants in the areas of HIV and in symptom management. T-42s are focused on occupational and environmental health.

The training grants are five years in duration but the expectation is that students will only be supported for about two years. And, in fact, when the faculty PI makes the decision to award one of these training opportunities to an incoming doctoral student, the student is guaranteed one-year based on satisfactory academic progress. If the student is doing well (e.g.no incomplete coursework), then they are renewed on the training grant.

The expectation is that the student will begin their doctoral training on the T-32 training grant but begin the writing of their NRSA (National Research Service Award) application (being awarded an NRSA as a doctoral student is the best predictor for success as a future faculty researcher).

Once the NRSA application is submitted, it often takes a year for it to be awarded. By then the student has typically completed their second year as a doctoral student with T-32 or T-42 support. In some cases it may take a little longer than two years. However, there is a great deal of motivation, by all parties, to get the NRSA application going right away. Faculty ability to successfully compete for subsequent training grants is based on reporting, among other things, their trainees' NRSA success rates.

How students are identified for a T-32 or T-42: the doctoral admissions committee and training grant PIs make decisions based on the applicant's goal statement and how closely it relates to the aims of the training grant.

Emergency Loans

If you are unable to cover fees one quarter or your car broke down and you can't pay the mechanic (or similar emergency) -- don't despair.

The School of Nursing, courtesy of generous alums, has a three-month interest-free emergency loan program for registered students.

Contact one of the student funding advisers in N319X: Cheryl Kemp or Aife [ee-fah] Murray.

You will meet with one of them and fill out a simple application that includes the signing of a promissory note.

Your check will be processed and deposited in your account.

You may only have one loan at a time and the loan must be paid off prior to graduation or leave of absence.

Loan Forgiveness

What Is Loan Forgiveness & Repayment?

Where there are shortages, there are loan forgiveness programs to entice people into that field or place of employment.

Loan forgiveness is an agreement to pay all or a portion of your educational loans in exchange for service.

You must have educational loans if you want to advantage of these programs. You borrow federal education loans while in school through the financial aid office.

These are forgiven in the years following graduation by federal, state, or private programs through meeting the agreed upon service requirement. Some programs, like the SON's Nurse Faculty Loan Program provide a stipend while you are in school and forgives 85% of it during the service agreement period.

Stimulus / Recovery Act & Loan Repayment

From June 2009 through September 2010, the NHSC budget will see increased funding, greater flexibility on sites, and more program support. Details!

Nursing LRPs currently fall into five main areas:

Teaching full-time in schools of nursing

Nurse Faculty Loan Program (federal program): Provides a stipend while in school
SNAPLE Nursing Faculty (state program): Pays off $25K in educational loans borrowed while in school
Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive (CSU-wide): Pays off $30K in educational loans borrowed while in school

Primary care settings for underserved populations

National Health Service Corp (NHSC) (FNPs, CNMs & Psych NPs): Pays off $50K-$150K in ed loans

Financial Aid Process

Applying for aid (loans, grants) consists of two* primary steps:

1. Filling out the FAFSA
2. Filling out the UCSF financial aid application *

Why both? How are they different?

Step one -- the FAFSA -- lets the campus know you are eligible to receive aid. It provides cut and dry information on your income, family size etc. (You can do this prior to filing your taxes or after but you'll need that sort of data plus the school code: 001319).

Step two --the UCSF financial aid application -- lets the Office of Student Financial Aid know that you want to receive aid. to be considered for financial aid. This is the form where you describe your cash flow: housing costs, children's tuition, any extraordinary expenses related to medical expenses or care for an aging relative, funds sent to overseas family, long-distance commuting costs for school and work etc. This is your opportunity to provide quantifiable data on the pressures you are encountering as a student.

Beginning in 2009, additional financial aid funds became available to School of Nursing students. Aid is an excellent strategy especially when there are so many repayment programs to pay off loans after graduation.

"No Loans"

Most students say "No Loans" when thinking about funding grad school.

Instead, some students pay for school via these methods:

Savings
Income
Scholarships & Fellowships
UC Fee Remission & other Educational Incentive Programs
Research or Teaching Assistantships (covers Education Fee)
House loans (see caution below)
Credit cards (see caution below)

You should re-consider education loans for these reasons:

Educational loans are forgive-able through Loan Repayment Programs
Educational loans will enable you to move through the program faster and earn a full income sooner
Unlike a house payment or credit card, the interest is deferred -- and can be forgiven through LRPs
Loans can be used for project funds, subject payments, travel -- whatever educational expense comes up
Homeowners do qualify for educational loans and financial aid packages are custom designed
Educational loans disappear if the borrower expires -- you will not burden your heirs

It helps the Dean raise more scholarship dollars when she can confidently state the total amount our students' have already successfully attracted in extramural support (money begets money).

MAKING GRADUATE EDUCATION FINANCIALLY POSSIBLE

Our site is meant to increase UCSF School of Nursing (SON) student solvency and sustainability through raising awareness around internal and external funding opportunities and providing podcasts, guidance via the Frequently Asked Questions, and other targeted topics in order to help our students leverage those dollars. We have added material for applicants and prospective students as a "fiscal preventive health" strategy.

The Dean's Philosophy

Your graduate education is a gift you give yourself. Graduate study at the UCSF School of Nursing is about expanding your horizons and creating an academic pathway to fulfill your goals.

Options for creating more time and / or more cash:

A campus research or teaching assistantship could provide coverage for your education fees, pays a wage, and provides research training

A UC career position provides a fee remission

Loan repayment programs could pay off any education loans you borrow right now to meet your obligations

An emergency loan could get you through a tight spot right now

Small strategic educational loans might relieve you of one work day a week (in sounder ways than a credit card)

Fee Remission

Fee remission or discount is a University of California Human Resources benefit. For those working in a career position (not per diem) at least 50% time in the UC system may take advantage of a fee remission in the University Registration and Educational Fees.

Due to the nursing shortage, those working in the UCSF Medical Center (and possibly other UC hospitals) as RNs are required to work 60% time (two 12 hour shifts per week) in order to take advantage of this HR benefit.

The Registrar's office requires students to fill out an Application for Fee Remission to receive the benefit.

There is a special Fee Reduction Program for Nursing Employees -- extended by President Yudof for three additional years until July 31, 2012 -- which allows eligible UC nurses to enroll in up to sixteen (16) units per term while receiving the fee reduction.

MEPN Funding Seminar Highlights held during April and May 2009
What is the difference between Student Financial Aid [SFA] http://saawww.ucsf.edu/financial and the School of Nursing Funding Unit [SON]?

SFA processes FASFA and UCSF financial aid applications

They make financial awards based on your budget

SFA is responsible for all federal loan programs and the Nursing Student Loan information

This office answers lender questions and extends you an offer of financial aid

The SON Funding Unit provides information on loan repayment and forgiveness http://sonfunding.wetpaint.com/page/Loan+forgiveness and we track scholarship or fellowship opportunities throughout the academic year in the monthly "Update" http://nurseweb.ucsf.edu/www/ix-cs.shtml%23update.

MEPN Financial Need Addendum
What is the MEPN Student Funding Addendum? It is an application the School of Nursing uses to determine need-based awards when "free money" funding opportunities become available during the school year. It is not mandatory you submit this information, but we encourage you to complete this addendum if you want to be considered for our limited "free money" opportunities.

Money for School
In winter quarter of your MEPN year you will be invited to attend the Money for School program offered in May each year for those about to enter the the specialty or MS portion of their training. Funding opportunities change in the MS portion of the program and this Saturday seminar is the best way to create an overall personal funding strategy and make sure you take advantage of the various free money support available through the School.

Funding Opportunities

The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional, or cultural boundaries. Previous Fellows have explored such topics as transnational religious education for Muslim women, the complex gender dynamics of transidentity management, women’s electoral success across racial and institutional contexts, women’s sports, militarism and the education of American women, and the relationship between family commitments and women’s work mobility...the deadline is October 11, 2009. http://www.woodrow.org/fellowships/women_gender/index.php

The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship is now accepting applications. At least 20 fellowships of $25,000 for 12 months will be awarded. The fellowships support study of religious or ethical values across all fields in the humanities or social sciences. The application deadline is November 15, 2009.

The Sociology Program supports basic research on all forms of human social organization -- societies, institutions, groups and demography -- and processes of individual and institutional change. The Program encourages theoretically focused empirical investigations aimed at improving the explanation of fundamental social processes. Included is research on organizations and organizational behavior, population dynamics, social movements, social groups, labor force participation, stratification and mobility, family, social networks, socialization, gender roles, and the sociology of science and technology. The Program supports both original data collections and secondary data analysis that use the full range of quantitative and qualitative methodological tools. Theoretically grounded projects that offer methodological innovations and improvements for data collection and analysis are also welcomed. The Sociology Program also funds doctoral dissertation research to defray direct costs associated with conducting research, for example, dataset acquisition, additional statistical or methodological training, meeting with scholars associated with original datasets, and fieldwork away from the student's home campus. ASA Congressional Fellowship

The Sydney S. Spivack Program in Applied Social Research and Social Policy

Deadline: February 1st The ASA encourages applications for its Congressional Fellowship. The Fellowship brings a PhD-level sociologist to Washington, DC, to work as a staff member on a congressional committee, in a congressional member office, or in a congressional agency (e.g., the Government Accountability Office). This intensive six-month experience reveals the intricacies of the policy making process to the sociological fellow, and shows the usefulness of sociological data and concepts to policy issues. Community Action Research Initiative (CARI Grants)

To encourage sociologists to undertake community action projects that bring social science knowledge, methods, and expertise to bear in addressing community-identified issues and concerns, ASA administers competitive CARI awards. Grant applications are encouraged from sociologists seeking to work with community organizations, local public interest groups, or community action projects. Appointments will run for the duration of the project, whether the activity is to be undertaken during the year, in the summer, or for other time-spans. [More...]

T-32 Training Opportunity
Pre and Post Doctoral Training Program in Health of Older Minorities The Sealy Center on Aging at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas has openings for both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral positions. These positions are for research focusing on the health of older minorities, with an emphasis on older Hispanics. Trainees collaborate with Center faculty who have over $42 million in research pertaining to minority health and aging in the areas of medical outcomes, health service utilization, social epidemiology, psychosocial stress and health promotion. Aging-related research initiatives at UTMB include a Center for Population Health and Health Disparities, the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center and the Hispanic Established Population for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly. Pre-doctoral fellows earn a Ph.D. degree in sociomedical sciences or health services research in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health, or other doctoral programs at UTMB.

Exceptional candidates will qualify for an additional $5,000 over the NIH stipend level plus moving expenses. All trainees receive full health care benefits. Additional funds are available to cover tuition and fees for relevant courses and other training related expenses.
Application Procedures
In order to be considered for the program, an applicant must be a citizen of the U.S. or permanent resident. All applications will be reviewed by the Training Grant Selection Committee and applicants may be invited to interview.

Loan Repayment Opportunity
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) repays outstanding student loans through its extramural Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). The LRPs target researchers who are or will be conducting nonprofit biomedical or behavioral research, and the application cycle opens September 1. The five extramural LRPs are Clinical Research, Pediatric Research, Health Disparities Research, Contraception and Infertility Research, and Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds. Applications will be accepted online until 8:00 p.m. Eastern time on December 1, 2009, at www.lrp.nih.gov.
